I'm so sorry for you! I know the pain of being without power for 6 days during a heatwave. After you've played every song you ever knew on the piano and tried to read by oil lamplight there's nothing to do but go to bed and sweat. After our siege, I swore I'd buy a crank up Victrola so we could at least have tunes as we sat on the porch trying to catch a breeze. Heck, we'd probably attract neighbors to dance on the sidewalk! On a serious note, this just makes you realize how vulnerable and close to the bone our aging power grid system in the U. S. is to catastrophic weather events and sabotage, both physical and from hackers. Sometimes I feel we're just whistling past the graveyard. Hang in there.

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band performing "4th Of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)" from Live at the Hammersmith Odeon, London '75

Listen to Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band

Hey Doris! I always think of vacations at the Jersey shore this time of year, Lavallette, Point Pleasant, Manasquan, my family driving across country from Des Moines, cousins then located on St. George's Hill, Weybridge, U.K., "across the road from Ringo Starr's house," they were blase about it, I thought that was the coolest thing ever, naturally, and good form from them not to gloat about pure happenstance...The summer of 1971 a whole troupe of the Turnbull cousins walked on the boardwalk (asphalt by then) from Manasquan to Asbury Park - not that far when you are age ten to nineteen, felt further walking back - rock band was playing near where we walked looking for the amusement park features, of course it MIGHT have been Springsteen and his E Street Band, four years before he was on the cover of Time and Newsweek, the same week in 1975!?!

I hope you and Tracy keep cool tonight, literally.I am thinking that there will be no area in this country that won’t be affected by some weather “ event “eventually.I live in north central Ohio and so far , we haven’t had a bad thing happen here weather-wise yet."Yet" is the big word here because the way Mother Nature is feeling, she is out for revenge from all of the crappy disrespectful treatment that she has gotten from man and woman-kind lo these many years. I don’t blame her an iota.

Mother Nature, exactly, She simply uses the medium of atmospheric physics to hammer the point home: "Pump billions of tons of heat-trapping greenhouses gases into our atmosphere, this is what you get, stop crying and mend your ways, damn it!

I totally concur. We’ve been so profligate with what Mother Nature has given us. Are leaving a world in crisis to our grandchildren. I’m so sorry.

One tree….parts of three states OUT.

Vulnerable infrastructure.

Expand full comment

Wow...was exactly what I thought. The infrastructure is really even more fragile than I thought. Expecting nearly 4” of rain in my neck of the woods tomorrow. Oh joy. The upside is that watering the garden isn’t necessary: watching it float away will be my entertainment for the day. Hoping the garden is the ONLY thing that floats away.

Oh no! I live in Florida. I would be checked into a hotel if our air went out this time of year. Y’all are obviously made of stronger stock than me. 😁

It's harder when you have critters.

Oh my gosh, you’re right! After we retired and my cat , aka, best baby died, we decided no more babies so we could travel. I sometimes forget the ties our animals give us.

Expand full comment

Yeah, I haven't traveled for years now unless they can go. You know the problem with cats going ,however, mine is a great traveler now and is okay with wherever we go even if she hasn't been there before. Was certainly not always the case and she would instantly hide and I figure she was probably a half inch from my eyeball and I still couldn't find her. However, she snores. So now it's easy.

I am so sorry! And I know just how it feels. Here in rural Roane county TN, we lose power if it rains, if the wind blows, if it's snowing, if it's hot and humid and too many a/c's are running, if it's a beautiful balmy day...Our power lines go through woods, across creeks, up and down forested mountains and we have electric co-ops, not well-funded. And big pine trees fall out of the ground due to a lack of much of a root system. The last big snowstorm a few years back we were without power for 5 days. We managed to get to Lowe's and buy the last generator and electric heater in the store. fun, fun...

I hope you get power back soon, Lucian. It’s ridiculous that one tree can still wipe out power in three states in today’s world. Sub note to the Republican clowns in our government: CLIMATE. CHANGE. Wake up!

Please take care in this heat and humidity-right now Maine doesn't have the heat but we sure do have the humidity and we're about to get another round of downpours that can turn into flash flooding.

Until we see you Monday! have a great weekend! Trump, Cannon, et al can wait until them.

Good luck! If you can find one, a generator is a great thing to have. Our street chug chugs with the things. During Esaias, we lost power for 8 days. We didn't have enough propane or whatever to take us through more than 4 days, or so we thought, but the generator got through 7 -- our very own Hanukkah miracle -- before the new supply came. I hope you don't suffer too much.

Hoping for rapid fix! Good luck. You should at least be cool while our democracy burns.

Good suggestions from other Commenters. Thanks. We have weather challenges up here in Minnesota, both summer and winter. For winter backup I have three gas burning fireplaces connected to city gas. The controls do require 110 VAC but I can bypass those. Summer is a worry. Biggest threat is tornadoes, although a hail storm did destroy the roof a few years ago. But the roof was old and needed replacing anyway. I can not defend against tornadoes, so I have a makeshift bunker under the basement stairs. I have a portable marine handheld radio left over from my sailing days. It has pretty good range. It is illegal to use it anywhere but on the water, but I will be happy to pay the fine if it saves my life.

Looks like they were not taking proper care of the fire break. If they had, they could have topped that tree to avoid it taking out the wires.

I also have the Jackery system. But I put in a 24 kw Generac unit. It will run my whole house indefinitely but we’ve not had any horrible weather here in western Chicago suburbs. I guess our nighttime streaming addiction justified the investment. 😆

Trees? In Pennsylvania? Who would have guessed? Not like that's what caused the 2003 blackout or anything, so there's no reason that the utility might have thought to, you know, inspect and maintain its powerlines. We accept appallingly incompetent service from our utilities, and are somehow not surprised when, say, Worst Energy drops $60 million on a bunch of thugs in the Ohio General Assembly to compel Ohio customers to pay for the decommissioning of its misbegotten nuclear power plants.

The nation's largest utility agrees to pay more than $55 million for two wildfires

The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO — Pacific Gas & Electric, the nation's largest utility, has agreed to pay more than $55 million to avoid criminal prosecution for two major wildfires sparked by its aging Northern California power lines and submit to five years of oversight in an attempt to prevent more deadly blazes.

The company didn't acknowledge any wrongdoing in the settlement announced Monday with prosecutors in six counties ravaged by last year's Dixie Fire and the 2019 Kincade Fire. The utility still faces criminal charges for a 2020 wildfire in Shasta County that killed four people.

Remarkable. I liked PG&E better as a band than as a utility; Buddy Miles was great. In the meantime, here’s a happy ending for OHIO: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/former-gop-ohio-house-speaker-sentenced-to-20-years-for-role-in-60m-bribery-scheme

Hang in there, compadre. You mention the felines, Tracy, and your eminence coping as best you can. Have I missed something? Not a word about that little Canis familiaris…. “Leo” (my own loyal hound) noted this lapse. What’s the story? (On tenter hooks until I hear back. “Arf!!! - sez Leo.)

Ah yes, I enjoy deploying the 'canis familiaris' wordological appelation in my best W.C. Fields

impression vocal delivery, upon the unwary pooch parents in the nearby park here in Mipples, most surprising it is, yes, how many of them recognize the attempted linguistic hornswogglery immediately, and most gratifying for the late great world's greatest juggler, I surmise.

Kind of a shame W.C.'s dangerous passion for booze and beer, and some of the dated humor, may prevent younger generations of film aficionados from discovering a comic genius --- on the other hand, artists of all kinds go in and out of favor with critics and the hoi polloi.

Selective quotations posted online from him don't convey anything near the uproarious comic bedlam, amid impeccably timed stunts, he could generate - assisted by highly skilled supporting cast members, to be sure. To wit, for example, Fields as a drugstore proprietor, confronting the notorious Mr. Muckle - again, it's all too easy to contort this sketch into some blanket stereotyping, as if it should define the premise as "bias against the disabled," which is absurd, but possible anyway. There's so much more going on besides the limited sight of Mr. Muckle.

YAAAYASS INDEED, WITH FINE VIDEO QUALITY FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT, A COMPILATION FROM HIS FILMS, 7 MINUTES 27 SECONDS.

William Claude Dukenfield (January 29, 1880 – December 25, 1946), better known as W. C. Fields, was an American comedian, actor, juggler and writer. Fields' comic persona was a misanthropic and hard-drinking egotist, who remained a sympathetic character despite his snarling contempt for dogs and children.

This is just a small collection of his great talent for comedy on all levels. His style of comedy was unique and traits of it can be found in modern day comedy. Al Bundy, Homer Simpson and Peter Griffin have a lot to owe to this guy.

I have recently learned that cats have evolved from Sand cats and so were originally desert animals. They'll stretch out somewhere and be fine. Humans need to keep hydrated. Hope the situation improves soon.
